Welcome to the 'I Want Online Now!' newsletter. I will try to avoid any hype, whatsoever. If any of you notice me starting to sound like one of those so-called gurus out there, please let me know. I would prefer you do it nicely, of course.

This newsletter contains ongoing lessons and articles about running an online business. Please feel free to send in any suggestions you have, i.e., lessons you've learned the hard way since you've been online. Maybe between us all, we can help others make the move to the internet without losing everything they own.

This is a weekly newsletter, published on Mondays. There will also be a classifieds only issue that comes out on Fridays, as soon as my life has stabilized! In addition, we will be running solo ads whenever they come in. Both the classified ads issue and the solo ads will have free ad contests. One of the solo ads each week will contain an ad code. Hi Everyone!

The continuing saga of my newsletter woes. Last week, neither newsletter went out. Why, you ask? Because just as I had found where to move the Coping Today newsletter and had signed up, my computer crashed. I was in the middle of writing both newsletters. My machine was overtaken by computer viruses, even though I had both Norton Antivirus and Norton's Personal Firewall installed and constantly updated. I run a full system scan every night! However, it appears that you must install Norton Antivirus after the firewall. I had antivirus first and then added the firewall.

I took the machine in to the shop, and, even though I told them my business was at a complete halt until it was fixed, it took two days for them to get to the diagnostics. Then they took another day to fix it. The techies told me that there was another antivirus/firewall that worked better, which I told them to go ahead and install. Unfortunately, they didn't have it in stock. So, when I came home with my nice, clean computer, I had no virus protection installed. I didn't install Norton again, since the viruses had gotten to my machine anyway. Well, after two hours on the internet, my machine had been reinfected. I decided to clean it myself, which I did, without wiping the disk, as the techies had done. I then reinstalled Norton Antivirus and the personal firewall, and it's been clean every since! I could have saved myself $250! I really believed they could do it faster. I just went online to Symantec's website and ran the scan from there. I printed out a list of files that were corrupted and proceeded to delete them, then empty the recycle bin. Two files had me a little worried, Explorer.exe and Winlogon.exe. However, I went ahead and deleted them (with the Windows 2000 disks in the CD drive, just in case). The Explorer.exe file was in the wrong directory for it to be the one being used. Also, if it was the one being used, Windows wouldn't have let me delete it. At least, it shouldn't have. :) Anyway, to finish a long story, it worked, and I didn't destroy anything.

If you're a Matrix fan and haven't seen Matrix Reloaded, you have to see it. Just be prepared for an ending that will make you crazy.

Writing a Newsletter

I tested out the 'hover' buttons. They look great. Go check out the home page of my website, http://www.i-want-online-now.com. You can also make the hover buttons look like submit buttons.

Also, after playing with popups last week, I would like to modify my first tip in the previous newsletter. When you put popups on your website, make sure they only pop up once per session, at the most. If you can have them come up once per hour, that's even better. Subscription Rocket works this way. You don't want the popups to come up everytime someone moves from one page to another on your website. However, you want to have the popups on every page, so that if someone comes into your website from a page other than the home page, they will still see the popups.

Put your advertising information on every page of the website, as well as your contact information.

Today, I'm going to start into writing a newsletter. If you have a product or a program that you want to sell or advertise, you need a newsletter. Even if you don't have a product yet, you can start with a newsletter and build up a loyal group of people who will trust you when you finally find a product you believe in.

If you already have a business and a website, your newsletter may be mostly about new products, product upgrades, and changes to your company and/or your website. Even then, some of what I'm about to pass on is still recommended.

Your first step in writing a newsletter is deciding on a theme. To do this, you want two things to dovetail - interest and supply. You want a theme that interests you and a theme that has been written about.

You will be writing and putting together this newsletter, most likely, every week. You had been enjoy it! So, the theme should be something that will interest you, week after week.

If no-one has written anything about what you're interested in, you will be the sole content provider. If you don't feel like writing one week, guess what. Too bad, you have no choice. On the other hand, if you can go to the article banks and find an interesting article, you at least have a backup.

I usually write small pieces, and, of course, this lesson, in newsletters. I then fill out the newsletter with articles I have found. I search through many articles to find ones that I think are beneficial.

So, before you even begin writing your newsletter, go to the article banks (see Issue 7, page 2) and do some research. See how many articles are written in the categories you're interested in. Read some of the articles and see if you like them. Think hard about what you would like to write. Can you come up with enough content to last more than one issue? I started one section in my other newsletter that I am hard pressed to keep coming up with content for.
