Welcome to the 'I Want Online Now!' newsletter. I will try to avoid any hype, whatsoever. If any of you notice me starting to sound like one of those so-called gurus out there, please let me know. I would prefer you do it nicely, of course.

This newsletter contains ongoing lessons and articles about running an online business. Please feel f^ree to send in any suggestions you have, i.e., lessons you've learned the hard way since you've been online. Maybe between us all, we can help others make the move to the internet without losing everything they own.

This is a weekly newsletter, published on Mondays. You will receive a classified ad issue each week, usually on Fridays. There will also be solo ads when they come in. Both the classified ads issue and the solo ads have f^ree ad contests. One of the solo ads each week will contain an ad code. The first person to submit the ad code and their ad to me will receive a f^ree top sponsor ad on the second page of the newsletter. Submit the ad code and 7 line, 65 character-per-line, ad to admin@i-want-online-now.com. The ad code looks like 'Ad Code: XXXX'.

The classifieds section will include a different ad code, formatted the same way. The first 5 people to send in this ad code will receive a f^ree classified ad in the Winners Circle. The ad for this contest should be no more than 5 lines, 65 characters-per-line. Remember, if your ads are longer, I will shorten them, but you may not like how I do it!

One subscriber was kind enough to let me know that the popups on the site are extremely irritating. Actually, I knew that. :) I'm trying to fix them so that each ad only shows up once per session, not each time you click on another page. I may have to use a different popup creator.

Last week was fairly productive. I got a whole bunch done on the Coping Today fee-based newsletter, and some stuff done on the members area for this website. I started setting up my own autoresponder. Yeahh! I can't do the next step until the domain propagates across the internet.

We have a whole lot of new people coming in now. Most of them are coming from a special I signed up for from OptinCity. Welcome, all of you! This Week's Lesson

Writing a Newsletter (Part 3)

So far, you have a theme and a basic layout for your newsletter. If you missed any of the lessons on writing a newsletter, please go back and read them before continuing.

The next decision you need to make is whether your newsletter is going to be text or html. You'll find that there are an equal number of people advocating one or the other. I personally just go with both. I use what's called multi-part. Of course, some email clients can't even handle that, but there is only so much you can do! A text-based newsletter is the easiest, of course. However, I don't know about you, but I am much more likely to read an html newsletter than a text-based newsletter. Nevertheless, I don't want to lose any readers who can only get text. Some of my email accounts only receive text, so I assume that I'm not the only one.

Sending an email with just a link to the online version of your newsletter is the absolute worst. I just skip those and so does everyone else I know. When you don't have time to read every newsletter that comes along, there needs to be something in the email that grabs your attention! While most of my newsletter is, in fact, online, I still send the full first page in email. I also put the entire newsletter online, so once someone is online, they can view the entire newsletter. Also, it allows people to view the newsletter before they sign up.

There's a brand new program that should be released soon, called VisionEdition. This is a totally different approach to getting newsletters to your readers that sidesteps email completely. I'm already signed up, just waiting for Ian to release it. My advise, with the spam problem, and the constant changes on the internet, is to jump on every new way you can find to get your newsletter out. Of course, only as long as they are free!

If you decide to do an html newsletter, the advise is to stay with a white background and black letters. Oh well! It probably is easier to read than blue and white. Of course, the old terminals used to be blue with white letters. I remember a boss of mine, many years ago, telling me the best combination to reduce eye strain, was black letters on a yellow background.

Well, it may be easier on the eyes, but I think it's kind of blechhh. The next advise is to stay with light backgrounds, if you don't do white. Well.... Heck, I'm not expecting anyone to spend the whole day on my site! I don't think anyone's eyes are going to fall out from reading my newsletter. I suppose that could explain why I have a headache by the time I finish writing this... Naaah.

In a text-based newsletter, since you can't use tables, it's a good idea to separate the sections using a special symbol. I usually use the tilde (~). Some publishers use a combination of symbols, to make it look prettier. It's really up to you. Just make sure the newsletter is sectioned. Put some white space in as well. If everything is bunched together, it makes the material look intimidating, and your readers will feel like they don't have time to read it all. Use many short paragraphs.
