News

Welcome to the 'I Want Online Now!' newsletter.  I will try to avoid any hype, whatsoever.  If any of you notice me starting to sound like one of those so-called gurus out there, please let me know.  I would prefer you do it nicely, of course.

This newsletter contains ongoing lessons and articles about running an online business.  Please feel free to send in any suggestions you have, i.e., lessons you've learned the hard way since you've been online.  Maybe between us all, we can help others make the move to the internet without losing everything they own.

This is a weekly newsletter,  published on Mondays.  There will also be a classifieds only issue that comes out on Fridays, as soon as we have enough subscribers (at least 100).  In addition, we will be running solo ads whenever they come in.   Both the classified ads issue and the solo ads will have free ad contests.  One of the solo ads each week will contain an ad code.  The first person to submit the ad code and their ad to me will receive a free top sponsor ad.

Publisher's Corner

Hi  Everyone!

Well, I was just starting to write the ezine when Mom stopped in.  Of course, we had to have a cup of coffee and chat for awhile.  Here I was, really ahead of the game today, and now I'm behind again!  Fortunately, Mom never reads my newsletters.  Anyway, one of my subscribers let me know that she was unable to read page 2 or page 3. I believe I've fixed the problem.  If you were unable to read page 2 or 3 and would like to, just go online to Newsletter Archives.

I'm still writing furiously to fill in the spaces on the website, as well as  get both of my newsletters out, advertise both of my websites, support my downline in SFI and all of the subscribers to my safelists, get started on my new career as a real estate agent, and feed the people and animals in my family.  Oh, and do the wash!  I still haven't started on the taxes!  And how many hats do you wear?!

I believe anyone who is trying to start a home based business must wear dozens of hats, even when they try to focus on just a few things.  Of course, I don't suppose that only applies to us, either!

This Week's Lesson

Getting Online - 2nd Step

The two most important parts of starting a business, online or off, are the product and the business plan.  A great product is important, but without a sound business plan, you won't get far with it.  Of course, the best business plan in the world won't make up for a lousy product! (Unless you've got a wizard for a marketing agent - remember the pet rock?)

So, all gurus I listen too say to choose something you really like and know to sell online.  Well, I tried several things I really liked and thought I knew, but didn't.  I even went through a program that helped me build a website based on what I thought would be really fun to do.  It worked pretty well, but I discovered once it was done that I was still at least a year away from a finished product.  I didn't have any content other than affiliate programs, and had no idea how to write any.  The website was for exotic adventure travel.  The only problem was that I had never done any adventure travel, so how was I supposed to write about it.  I couldn't even get information from an article broker online for that type of site.  I would have had to pay someone to write the information.

I tried a couple of different stores, but ended up spending more money on advertising than I ever made from the stores, even one that I had a web designer build for me.  It was a beautiful site, if I do say so myself, but it never made any money.

So, here are some suggestions from my experiences:

  1. Choose a small number of products, as few as you can.  This will allow you to focus your advertising and your content.  You can ad more products as your business starts to take off.

  2. Avoid 'malls' and general stores.  I have never bought anything from a mall and I don't know anyone who has.  Specialty shops are much more interesting.

  3. Don't buy a mega-book or mega-business package.  I did, and I put up one business before I gave up.  There is just too much stuff in the packages, much of which is useless.  If you do buy one of those packages, start with one business and focus on it.  The worst part of those packages is the packages within packages and all of the different ways you can market the same products.

  4. If you decide to sell ebooks, write your own.

  5. All of the ebooks that come with resell rights inevitably include lots of links inside that try to upsell your buyers to make the writer more money.  If you want the links to make you money instead, you will pay a whole lot more.  It's much better to write your own ebook with your own links!

  6. If you decide to open an online store, you really need to calculate your margin before you decide on drop shippers or wholesalers.  I opened a couple of small stores, but the cost of marketing far outweighed the small percentage of profit I made from each sale.

  7. Big problem, - if you are an affiliate of some company and are selling just their products and have no other content on your site, you will have problems getting decent listing in Google or Overture.  You may not even be able to get into their pay-per-click programs - not that I advise you to do that anyway, if you're on a small budget.

  8. Focus, focus, focus.  Get one product or set of products off the group before starting another.  If one doesn't work, don't keep spending time and money on it while starting another and another.  Stop working the first one completely.  If you really like the concept, rework it later, when you are in the black.

  9. If one of your products or programs is making money, don't neglect it!  Keep on top of advertising and updating, etc.  Don't get so busy on your new projects that your old ones die.

  10. Stick to your business plan!  If you need to modify the business plan, do so, but make sure you calculate all of the ramifications of doing so.  Once you've modified it, stick to the new plan.

  11. Did I mention focus?  It's hard, even with just one product, not to get lost out there, with all of the advertising options, such as different start page exchanges, ezine directories, banner exchanges, etc.  With each additional program or product, it gets that much more confusing.

  12. Whatever you decide to sell, make sure you know enough about it to write about it.  You'll want to be able to write an ezine, articles, and content for your webpages, which you won't be able to do if you don't know your subject.  You can always go to the library!  But, since you're going to be spending a lot of time writing about it, it better be a subject you enjoy.
