Web Hosting
What do all those features mean?
One of the most daunting things about figuring out what Web Hosting company and package to use is working out what all those features actually mean! Which makes it very difficult to figure out what you actually need to get. So let's see if we can't make some sense out of it all.
The Features!
Let's run through the list of a Typical Web Hosts offerings.
- Disk Space - How much space you'll be able to store all your files on.
- Bandwidth - How much data you are allowed to send to your sites visitors Per Month!
- Email Accounts - You can create a number of email accounts using your websites address.
- MySQL Databases - You'll need these to install any scripts on like a Blog.
- PHP - You'll need this to run any scripts, like a Blog.
- Sub Domains - Lets you add separate URLs from the Main Domain Name.
- Add On Domains - Let's you host extra websites on the one account.
- Website Administration - Graphical Management Systems like Cpanel.
These days, all the big players offer these features. Now let's try explaining them.
Disk Space
First up is the amount of Disk space you will get.
Now, it's always good to go back to the basics here and actually make some sense out of what a website actually requires.
How Big is a Web Page?
We'll come up with some numbers here for a typical webpage. So let's go back a step further and see what a webpage actually is.
Now if you've been to my other pages on here you may have read this already, if not, go and take a look at What Makes A Webpage.
Just quickly recapping, a webpage contains HTML which is basically just a text file. This file is generally in the range of 1 to 5 thousand bytes (1 to 5 kbytes). So let's say your pages are about 5kbytes each.
Now if you have an allocated Disk Space of 500 MegaBytes (500 Mbytes, or 5,000,000 bytes) the total number of pages you could have would be 5,000,000/5,000 which comes to the grand sum of 1000 pages.
That's a lot of writing for you!
Then there are Images.
Your website, will no doubt, also have some images. Now typically, depending upon how well the webmaster (You) optimizes the size of these images, then let's assume that there will be 100 images of about 30k each. So that will take 100 x 30,000 = 3,000,000 bytes or 3 Megabytes.
Email Accounts
Ok you might want to have some email accounts for your site. Each of these are typically allocated 10Megabytes. (You can changes this of course). So for 5 accounts, you'll need 5 x 10,000,000 = 50 Megabytes.
Running a Blog?
A Blog and other scripts require a Database. Most Webhosting accounts have MySql as standard (Check for this in the Features List! Now the size of a Database is a bit harder to figure. For a normal size Blog lets say 10 Megabytes including the script (which also takes space).
What's the sum?
Let's see. We have estimated about 3 Megabytes for our Images. 50 Megabytes for our email accounts. 10 Megabytes for the Blog Files and the Database. Let's throw in a few webpages as well, say 200 at 5Kbytes a page, so that comes to 100 Megabytes.
The Total is : 3 + 50 +10 + 100 which comes to 163 Megabytes. So any webhosting that will give you about 200 Megabytes per website, would fit the standard website. But 500 Megabytes gives you a little room to move.
BandWidth
Now, having discussed typical sizes of things in regards to files and images, you need to send this stuff to your visitors. And that is where the allowed Bandwidth comes in.
Bandwidth is the allowed number of bytes your website can send down the wires to all those people visiting your website each month. It's important to remember that this is a Per Month Figure.
Bandwidth is what costs the money. The Web Hosting company has to buy it from their ISP and they charge you for it. It's the same as any restrictions you may have on your internet account on how much data you can download.
Some more Math
Ok so say a typical visitor reads about 10 pages, which include a few images. So as a guess, let's work on the magic number of a page taking about 100Kbytes from our bandwidth. Times that by 10 pages and that's 1,000,000 bytes per visitor.
If we are having a good month, we could get 100 visitors so they would use 100 Megabytes.
That would require us to have an account that has an allocated bandwidth of 100 Megabytes. Of course the better hosting companies willl give you something in the Gigabyte range (1,000 Megabytes).
MySQL Databases
Now if you are using a script, like a Blogging Script, you'll need to have the ability to create a MySQL database.
Some Hosting companies offer none, to 1 to unlimited MySQL Databases (which in reality is restricted by your Disk Space).
Depending upon your needs, 1 MySQL Database would be enough.
PHP
Now to let the Scripts run (those that are written in PHP) you'll need to have PHP available. Again the better companies have this included as default. Everyone runs Blogs etc these days and you'll probably want to as well.
SubDomains
A Subdomain is a domain name that you do not need to register as it is part of the main Domain Name.
For instance, if you have the website http://www.HomeBusinessMLM.com which is registered, you can easily add on new domains like www.forum.HomeBusinessMLM.com etc. The Files still live as a Folder under you main website except they are called differently.
I'm out to lunch over Subdomains. The Alternative to the above is to just create the folder from the main website and access the forum by using www.HomeBusinessMLM.com/forum. But that's upto you.
Sub Domains are offered by some and not by others. They're not considered absolutely neccessary so the number you are allowed can vary quite widely with different Hosting Companies.
If you are new to Websites etc, I wouldn't worry too much about them.
Add On Domains
Ok Add On Domains are a different kettle of Fish to Sub Domains. This gives you the ability to host more than one website on the one account.
So if you were allowed to have 3 Add On Domains. You could host your main domain name and 3 other separate ones. But they are all accessible through your main user control panel. Which means these would only be for your use. You woudn't be able to sell the space to others and give them access (That's a Reseller Account Setup) to your hosting, as they'll be able to go wild in your account as well. So Add On Domains are good for your own use only and they all Share the total resources you have. Those being your Diskspace and Bandwidth etc...
In most cases these give you a much cheaper option than having 4 separate hosting accounts.
Website Administration
Now, you need some way to access your hosting account manager. A great many hosting companies use a account manager called CPANEL. It does everything you'll ever need to do and at 1st it's a little daunting - all new things are - but you'll get the hang of it real quick.
There are other kinds of manangers like Plesk and some hosts even have their own managers they've created themselves.
Webhosting comes in all kinds of different flavors.
